Psychosynthesis has been described as The psychology with a Soul. In modern day society, we heavily rely on 'mind' based therapies but this is just one aspect of our being. In Psychosynthesis, we see that there is more to the psyche that just the mind. The aim is to integrate all of who we are: body, feelings, mind, sexuality and spirituality. Spirituality in this context is used to describe the deeper essence of an individual, the part that continuously calls one to improve and grow.

Roberto Assagioli, a colleague of both Freud and Jung was a pioneer of Psychoanalysis in Italy. In 1911, he began to develop Psychosynthesis, a developmental approach to psychology, not meant to replace Psychoanalysis but to complement it. Later, Abraham Maslow studied what Assagioli called the Higher Unconscious and the realm of peak experiences that later gave birth to the field of Humanistic and Transpersonal psychologies.

Psychosynthesis is an approach to life, counselling and psychotherapy that is inclusive of working with repressed past traumas that are impacting on one's life, current issues in the here and now and the vast potential for growth, healing and change that often lies deeply buried within.  We often repress the 'good, the light and the beauty' within ourselves and can be just as destructive as repressing the 'bad, the dark and painful experiences'. Psychosynthesis aims to give space to the whole person, the different parts of who we are, the light and the shadow.

Psychosynthesis tools can be applied to many areas of life including relationships, parenting, teaching, politics, medicine, administration and the arts.
